Bangladesh Salt Iodization Information System (BSIIS)

Iodine deficiency is one of the greatest global public heath concerns. Lack of iodine severely affects the development of the brain and nervous tissue. During the last decade it has been recognized that iodine deficiency is the leading cause of intellectual impairment. Iodine deficiency at critical stages during pregnancy and early childhood results in impaired development of the brain and consequently in impaired mental function. The problem related to iodine deficiency is known as Iodine Deficiency Disorders or IDD. The problem is observed more severe in rural than urban areas.

Nutrition International (NI) in Bangladesh is supporting the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (CIDD) Project of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) under the Ministry of Industries to help achieve its goal of universal salt iodization (USI).

The main objective of this project is to develop a web enabled tool/software which can handle data being collected by MI field level staff on quantity and quality of salt iodization and prepares a weekly and monthly report including in a graphical form to show the trends.
